"'Miracle' Baby Born To Brain-Dead Woman Dies"
Remember the stories about how this big "miracle" occured? Yeah, God is good.
Remember how this was a "miracle" from God ...you know, how God kept this brain dead woman alive (using cutting edge science, of course) so that she could give birth to a miracle baby. God seems hard-pressed to get anything done apart from using much-hated science these days. And then the miracles still turn out to be crap. They just aren't making miracles like they used to.
News Link: Miracle Baby dies
This story illustrates the dangers of calling every unusual occurence a miracle.
Like when Starr Jones visited Indonesia just before they had the big tsunami, then she thanked God for the miracle that she wasn't in the tsunami... the hell with the other 250,000 victims right? Starr Jones didn't get killed so it's a miracle of God. Pretty nasty miracle.
Some guy prays for his home to be saved from a wildfire and it is, so there's a miracle. But what about all his neighbors who lost THEIR home, hmm?
It's a trick of the mind. You pray for something good to happen. If it does, you proclaim a miracle of God and the gullible (and the news media) repeat this mindlessly. If bad things happen instead, you don't tell anyone about it, you just tell yourself that nobody can understand the mind of God and the world goes on in its ignorance of failed prayer.
It's heads I win tails you lose thinking. No matter what happens, you either get a miracle or a mystery - and nobody ever gets to look at all the prayers where the outcome is really bad.
Locally, we have Damon Coates, a police officer who was shot in the face. His family are fundamentalist Christians so when Damon didn't die, it was immediately proclaimed a miracle of God. And all the TV news people repeated the claim that this was an incredible miracle. The truth: Damon Coates got the best cutting edge medicine we could offer. Science did everything they could for him - yet he still turned out to be a semi-vegetable who can't even take care of himself and never will. And THIS is a miracle?
Oh, as a side note, one of those relatives who got to go on TV and tell us all how Damon's survival is proof that God performs miracles today is also the former head of the Oregon Christian Coalition - and he was also recently charged with molesting kids. Go figure.
There's a lesson here - but it's not a lesson that fundamentalists would like you to learn.
