A Look Back At The County Fair – Caricature Artist

A last minute decision to enter two paintings in the fair – thanks to pressure from family members – meant I would have to see something of the event, even though it’s a bit much for me.

I haven’t worked at the county fair in years, but they usually have a caricature or portrait artist somewhere on the grounds. Here he is…

He was charging the going rate for a caricature, a bit more for color images. I didn’t see him do a color portrait, but he did a lot of line drawings. His shading was pretty good, I can’t comment on the caricature because it wasn’t my style.

McFeral Cat Has a Kitten!

Art is life, life is art. I suspected that McFeral had a baby somehwere. Sometimes McFeral would take the piece of hamburger and disappear for a long time… maybe 15 to 20 minutes. I thought, she has kittens hidden somewhere far from here. Today, for the first time, she showed up with her half-grown baby in tow. She finally trusted me enough…

It must be hard to be a mom, friendless and homeless. McFeral cat does her best and we appreciate her for that. Sure, there are too many cats in the world. You know what? There are too many people in the world, too. Way too many. But we don’t hate people for existing and we shouldn’t hate the feral kitties either.

One'Eyed McDonald's Feral Cat She’s had a very hard life, or so I surmise from her missing eye. Well, and the fact that you really can’t get anywhere near her. But she’s learned that the Artmobile means food. Although my contribution is paltry and insufficiently regular, I am glad I could do something for the poor girl. And I feel even better about that knowing that she has a surviving child.

McFeral Cat Knows Me

If one needs to depend on the kindness of strangers, they may be out of luck. Particularly if you are a feral cat. This one sometimes visits the McDonalds in Tillamook. Since I am there once a week or so, too, it’s gotten to know me. I feed him or her.

There is too much cruelty in the world, and too little kindness. The little one-eyed kitty probably can’t hunt and most people chase it away. I can’t do that.

Old Iron, Old People, Old Thoughts – Old Art?

This was a show over the weekend. No, I wasn’t there drawing people – it wasn’t an art show and I wasn’t invited. Of course, I didn’t know it existed either, so there you go… I just happened to be visiting Tillamook today when some old cars caught my eye. It turns out they were having an event called Old Iron.

Old School Bus, VERY old
Old School Bus

Another Angle On The Old BusI love old stuff. It reminds me of how temporary everything in life really is, how what is a big deal NOW will be a joke later. And then even later, it becomes an object of nostalgia.

Pepsi Truck, A Very Old Delivery WagonIt isn’t art… or is it? The loving care with which these machines were originally designed was an art to the designers. The restoration of these relics was an art for the persons who did it. Art is in the eye of the beholder, after all, and in a sense these are sculptures that teach us about the early 20th century. Maybe I should have been there.

Several Antique CarsThe more I thought about it, the more I thought that I should have learned to build cars instead of draw people. The old cars, trucks and tractors last a lot longer and everyone understands them. But I didn’t think of things like that as art when I was younger. I guess I wasn’t smart enough. On the other hand, I like what I do so what am I agonizing over?

Antique TractorsWell, I’m not agonizing, really. I just obsessively muse about everything I encounter. Always looking for a deeper meaning even when none exists. I still think I’m right about the old cars as art, though. But like everything else in art, it’s just an opinion.
