Look, Jerry is just one offender - possibly not the worst of them. Those who have turned in their Jesus badges for the ones of money and political power, and yet still claim to speak for God -- These people are the enemies of the church, the ones who can destroy it from within.

Religion : Power of Faith, Power of Falsehood

Slowly, but surely, the sleepers awaken ... or so I hope. I'm talking about those who have always considered themselves to be people of faith but who never think of themselves as worthy to speak out in defense of that faith.

Of course, that's exactly the way one should be. Christianity has never had a problem with people who just try to live their own lives according to the principles Jesus taught. The bane of Christianity has been the hyper-arrogant who declare themselves to be the spokesmen of God. Those types have plagued religion from the beginning of time, and mostly we've been able to just put up with them. Lately, though, it seems as though catastrophe is looming. Our faith is under fire. But the terrible menace to true faith is an insidious cancer that is eating up the church from the inside.

The biggest threat to the Christian faith in America is NOT evolution. The biggest threat to Christianity, the one that has the genuine power to destroy it, is the threat from within; it is the multi-headed monster of theocratic fundamentalism.

Late May Projects, More on Stupid TV Weatherpeople

I know I have to finish several abstracts for upcoming shows and that movie project, but I also need to work on something more expressionist because certain people have bugged me long enough.

I'm talking about super-mega-hypocrites like Falwell and Dobson - your "religious" leaders if you believe that Jesus was mostly interested in money and political power. They've fooled a lot of people, it's true, but I think it's time to show that the emporer has no clothes ...

Art and Spirituality : Faith in Art

I have faith that my art will one day be as famous as Picasso's or Pollock's work. I really do. I can't prove it, however, and the only evidence I can produce is the fact that I keep producing my art despite the lack of adequate economic rewards. Those who collect my work also share my faith. We don't really know what the future holds, but we believe in it.

By its own definition, faith is a strong belief in something for which there is little or no supporting evidence. If you have evidence, it isn't faith.

Art Philosophy : The Penalty of Greatness

Every human endeavor has its aficionados, and its purists. It has its own Taliban, too, who will punish you if you fail to follow in the line of orthodoxy. In painting, one orthodox view is that you must do ONE thing and one thing only, and to do otherwise will incur penalties.

Arts : Stupid Weatherman, Botched Suicide - Expressionist Painting

It's all in the wrist action ...

This expressionist painting, acrylic on Masonite, is intended to convey something about suicide more than about TV weathermen. The caption is:

Having decided that the life of lies and deceipt for money was unconscionable, the weatherman decides to commit suicide - But even that he cannot do right! Cutting the wrists crosswise is for movies, dummy.

Religion : Spirituality and Rationality, the Perfect Imperfect

The quest for meaning and purpose has always been at the center of this artist's life. I remember on my fourth birthday, sitting on a curb, contemplating what it meant to have lived for four years.

I couldn't remember the whole four years, it seemed like a long time. Yet at that age I also realized that the numbering of my years also meant that they would end someday.

By age seven I was trying to devise ways to test the possibility that there was something more to life than what one could see, and whether or not there was a god in control of everything. The tests I thought up seem silly to an adult but I was trying.

Art : Expressionist Oil Painting, TV Weatherman And Truth

Well, I've always said the biggest liars on television are weathermen. They never admit when they are wrong. And because they lie and never admit they are wrong, that makes them the embodiment of evil for our purposes.

Art : Cannon Beach, Oregon - Visionary Oil Painting

It is visionary because it's not quite reality, just a little beyond it. And yet is is truth. This was a small oil sketch, done completely freehand, no drawing or anything. I wanted to maintain a free, flowing style of the plen aire impressionists. I let the paint determine where it wanted to be.

Art : Light In A Dark Forest Acrylic Abstract Painting

My vision of truth in art continues ... For lovers of object-oriented abstact expressionism, I wanted you to know that I finally completed my work on the paintng, Light In A Dark Forest. This is not a true object-oriented piece in its entirety as I added action elements, gestural painting to create additional movement, but it uses the principles of object-orientation to create the appropriate mind altering effect. This is the trend in my painting philosophy of late. For those who have been followng this work in progress, you will see that the final version really pops.

Art: Nestucca 'Bay', River Oil Painting

One of my favorite spots to sit ... it's a gravel boat launch ramp at the lower end of the Nestucca River just Southwest of Pacific City.

I think I'm going to be going back to doing more oil paintings even though they take forever to dry, and thus have to be held for ... well, months. But sometimes it is worth it.
