Abstract Expressionism, The Movement Goes On!
I'm not only busy working at developing my own branch of painting, you know: I still create more "traditional" abstract expressionist paintings and I thought I would share some of my most recent works with you. This also gives me an opportunity to discuss current thinking within the abstract expressionist movement.
Among the pure abstract expressionists, we have seen a couple of trends in recent years. One is toward minimalism, the other toward a blending of the two traditional abstractionist approaches of color field and action painting. In the latter case, colors are positioned with or without negative space in an appropriate arrangement and then an action element is added. What this means is that Pollock and DeKooning are being brought together in new and interesting ways so that the classical labels are beginning to lose their meaning.
There are several great artists doing fabulous things with paint and I won't try to name there here for fear of forgetting someone. I suspect that some of these artists are melding branches of the abstract expressionism mostly by accident but I can't prove it. Certainly some artists - the best of them - know exactly what they are doing and are working purposefully to bring down the walls of art definition. Here are two examples from my own work:
