Religious Fundamentalists - They Don't Really Believe It

"Kill them all," he said with a big grin, "kill them all - in the Name of the Lord." He was appearing on CNN at the time... live, national television. Who was this compassionless, bloodthirsty monster? ....I could have titled this, "losing my religion."

I didn't really want to talk about religion, but someone has to and the silence of others forces me to do this. Now as for the bloodthirsty maniac: His name is Jerry Falwell, the preeminent leader of western religious fundamentalism. It was just the other day. Now the words aren't new: Ann Coulter, another regular on television, has said that we must kill all of their leaders and forcibly convert the survivors to Christianity. This is the face of religion today.

Falwell is an American religious leader. He takes personal credit for reelecting George W. Bush, although I suspect that this is just overactive ego: People voted for George for many reasons, such as John Kerry being a waffling slimy politician, and probably Falwell's personal endorsement would be low on the list. But this diary entry is not about politics; it is about the gripe I have with religion today, and it may answer the question about why I don't paint the nice things I used to paint.

Oregon Impressions : From The Sketchbook, 11/1 - 12-1-2004

Even though my abstract works are the cutting edge of art and worthy of my full attention and time, I find I must still keep in touch with my roots. One of the ways I do that is through my watercolor sketchbook.

Sketches done in watercolor en plen aire - in the open - seem to come alive. The sketches teach me about life.

Agate Beach, Oregon - watercolor sketch. Click for a larger version Agate Beach is an area just north of Newport, Oregon. It's about an hour's drive from my current 'home.' While there, it was a time when a storm was going to be coming in... red skies at night aren't always a good sign. It depends. I thought the interplay of colors was exciting to the point of artificiality. When the paint dried on my sketch pad, I found the results captured my imagination.
